
Julie London (nee Peck, September 26, 1926 - October 18th, 2000) is an American actress and singer who spanned over 40 years. London, a torch singer famous for her soft, mellow vocals and her languid contralto voice and recorded more than 30 albums of pop and jazz classics between 1955 and 1969. Her recording of "Cry Me a River" which she released on her debut album, was accepted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2001. In addition to the music-related recognition, London was nominated for the Golden Globe Award in 1974 for her performance as nurse Dixie McCall in the television show Emergency!. London was born in Santa Rosa to vaudevillian parents. Her career began as an actress while she was an elevator operator in downtown Los Angeles. London's career as an actor of 35 years began in film in 1944. It featured parts in the lead female in numerous westerns. The singer signed a recording contract with Liberty Records in the mid-1950s. This marked the beginning of her professional career in music. Her final studio album was released in 1969. She continued to enjoy success in the role of the female main character in the role of Dixie McCall on the television series Emergency! (1972-1979), where she co-starred with Bobby Troup.
